Discus Fish Breeding - Never Buy Another Discus Again
Discus fish in my view are probably the most beautiful fresh water fish you can keep. Now I do know some people might say cichlids or clown loaches however it isn't the point. With their beauty comes a cost Discus can cost in upwards of 300 dollars a fish. Yeah I know it sounds crazy and I would by no means pay or propose someone shell out such a price for any discus. With all being said where I am from here in Michigan you'll pay approximately seventy five bucks for an adult and a little less for a juvenile which can be around thirty five bucks or so. Even though these prices are high when you follow a number of careful tips you may only have to buy 2 discus for your tank.
Discus Fish Breeding - Getting Set Up
Caring for discus is only the 1st fun part of the hobby. To save money on these pricey fish I want you to take it to a higher level. Breeding discus fish will be the amusing and exciting technique to save money on your pastime.. Keep at heart this will not be as simple as it sounds; it seriously isn't as tough as it sounds either. Due to the lofty cost of the fish breeding discus fish is becoming popular among hobbyist in these current times. In various situations the fish will even breed with no special attention providing you with a pleasant surprise in a handful of weeks.
Discus Fish Breeding - Stepe To Get Started
There are a couple of ways to get started with discus fish breeding. When you are planning a new discus fish aquarium you've got 2 options. First the easiest decision. To take the simple approach consult your vendor and let them know you wish to buy a mating pair. Big time discus keepers prefer this choice because it is the easiest strategy to go. it is also the most expensive choice of the two as well. Mating pairs can cost almost 200 or 300 dollars a couple. The next option is to buy a group of a minimum of six juvenile fish. When using this system it isn't one hundred percent guaranteed however it frequently will succeed in most situations.
Discus Fish Breeding - Whos The Parenets
With some time, in your main tank you may start to notice who mating pair is going to be. What I mean by this is you will notice two fish pair off and they will start defending their territory against all of the other tank mates. When you notice this behavior you've found mom and dad. Now it's time to move them both into the breeding tank. A breeding tank is mostly a tank separate from the primary tank you put your fish in. When breeding discus fish it is advised to have at least a 20 gallon tank for the two fish
Discus Fish Breeding - The Breeding Tank
When you set up your “Discus fish breeding tank” use the water from the first tank to keep them worry-free during the exchange. You would like to keep the base clear, no rocks no gravel. The reason for this is to make it easier to keep the water clean by removing any leftover food and waste. The only decor you need in the tank is really a vertical spawning surface. "Angle fish and discus fish lay their eggs in the identical manor. Both discus and angle fish will lay their eggs on a vertical surface. Their are many types of vertical surfaces you can use. In my case I use an upside down ceramic pot or some type of plant like a Java fern. When you so desire you can put a potted plant inside the tank to give the fish some shelter. This is not necessary by any means. An important tip with filtration. I use a sponge filer for the biological load plus I like to use small power filter as well and put a little bag of peat moss in the rear to keep the pH level in check.
A SMALL BUT VERY IMPORTANT DISCUS FISH BREEDING HINT
It is very important you remember your breeding tank is generally much smaller than your main fish tank You have to watch this tank for ammonia spikes and water temp. Check the water daily and clean the waste from it every day. This is essential for the Discus fish breeding process. Discus like clean water and won't breed without it.
