Paid vs. Free Writing Courses Online

So, you want to write. Chances are you’ve heard it’s a great way to make a living but you just aren’t sure how to get started. You start looking at free writing courses online, but are they really a good idea? Let’s take a look at the differences between paid and free courses.

Free Writing Courses Online

Free sounds great. You don’t spend a penny and you learn how to become a freelance writer. But things aren’t quite that simple.

First of all, if you sign up for a free online writing course, chances are you’re going to be on someone’s mailing list to be sold a course or product that has to do with writing. They are giving away the free part so you will want to buy from them. Which is a great tactic, but be aware that what you think is free is probably just a teaser. You won’t learn enough from the free course to actually be able to write.

Free courses can give you some of the basics, but what they usually do is tell you what, not how. That means you still have to figure out how to implement everything into a successful freelance career. For some people, that’s all that is necessary, but if you need a bit more guidance, then you should probably consider a paid writing course.

Paid Writing Courses Online

Not all paid writing courses are good. In fact, some of them charge far too much money and give you the same thing you’d get in free writing courses online! Not cool. That means you have to do your research, which can take a bit of time, but is usually worth it since you will be dropping quite a bit of money.

What many people don’t realize is that a writing course is an investment in your career. You wouldn’t start a trucking business without any training on how to drive, would you? So, you need to look at this as an investment. With good writing courses, you may even earn your money back during the course, if you follow the steps.

Paid writing courses have another huge advantage. They are often interactive, which means you have a teacher that you can talk to and ask questions of. This often makes the difference between successfully completing the course and selling your work or just reading through the lessons and not actually doing anything.

While free writing courses online may be free, you do get what you pay for!
