English Premier League- Tottenham Stun Wigan 9-1

The Tottenham Hotspur resoundingly beat the Wigan Athletic during their matchup in the thirteenth round of the FA English Premiership. The game took place at White Hart Lane Stadium, where the home team quickly deployed its offensive attack, gaining its first goal at minute 9. Striker Peter Crouch headed a pass to the bottom of the Latics’ net.

Both teams had a steady game as the first half progressed. The Spurs devoted themselves to heavy attacks, but the visitors knew how to defend themselves, bravely resisting Tottenham’s offensive attempts.

The final score obscures the incredible performance Wigan put on at the beginning of the game. Tottenham may have opened the scoring, but the team had trouble completing another goal due to Wigan’s solid defense. The first half came to end in this tone, with the score 1-0 in favor of the Hotspurs.

But in the second half, Tottenham raised its level of play, ready to overcome its opponents.

To this end, Jermain Dafoe shined. Dafoe, who may have been compensating for a failed shot in the first half, scored the second goal for his team at minute 51. From that time onwards, Dafoe opened a deluge of goals. Only three minutes later, with the help of Honduran midfielder Wilson Palacios, the English striker make the score 3-0.

Trying not to drop behind the scoreboard, Wigan desperately sought an opportunity to score. The players finally gained their opportunity at minute 57, when Paul Scharner scored their consolation goal.

The pleasure of scoring their first goal collapsed almost immediately as, only a minute later, Dafoe, assisted by Aaron Lennon, sent in his third goal of the game and the fourth overall for his team.

By this point in the game, Wigan appeared thoroughly disoriented, and the players’ level of play revealed a growing a sense of discouragement.

At minute 64, Tottenham midfielder Lennon put the score at 5-1, only to drop the Greater Manchester’s hopes even further. Five minutes later, Dafoe – yet again – made his presence felt on the pitch by scoring his fourth goal of the game. He would make another point shortly thereafter, his fifth goal that put the score at 7-1. His points were followed by a self-goal from Chris Kirkland, Wigan’s goalkeeper.

At this point, the visiting team lost its motivation and strength and stood helpless before its opponents, a vulnerability which was strongly reflected on the scoreboard.

But this incredibly humiliating rout did not end here. At minute 90, Croatian midfielder Niko Kranjcar brought the score to 9-1 before the game closed. The win was an historic one for Tottenham, who last defeated a team so thoroughly some 32 years ago, against Bristol Rovers in the second division, 9-0.

With this win, Tottenham situated itself in fourth place of the overall standings of the Premiership, tying the team, at 25 points, with Arsenal.
